The Basic Poker Rules
If you are an absolute poker beginner, we’re here to guide you through the basic rules. The game of poker is traditionally played against other players. The objective of the game is to finish with a better hand than that of your opponents’. Every different poker variation has its own rules so it’s important that you learn the rules of that particular game before you start to play.
Most poker games follow the same basic rules concerning the value of the poker hand that you are trying to win. The game of poker begins with each player submitting their forced bet, called an ante, into the pot. The game goes clockwise from the dealer and the player on the dealer’s left gets the first card. In some poker games, you get a complete hand of five cards and you can exchange some cards to try and obtain a better hand. In community card pokers, the dealer will deal a set of shared cards which you can use to complete your hand.
Now, the first round of betting begins! After seeing their cards, each player must make a decision on what to do next, starting from the player on the dealer’s left. The different types of actions you can do are:
- Call – You match the previous bet.
- Check – You pass the action to the next player.
- Raise – You put in at least double the bet amount of the previous player.
- Bet – You bet at least the minimum.
- All in – You bet all your chips.
- Fold – You take yourself out of the game and lose your contribution to the pot.
If a betting round ends with just one player and everyone else folds, then the bettor will take the pot without even showing his or her hand. This is where your bluffing skills can come in handy! Should there be more than one player remaining in the last wagering round, called a showdown, will occur. During a showdown, the remaining players reveal their entire hand and the player with the best hand will win the pot. The most important skill that’s required in poker is to know which cards to hold on to and which to exchange for the best possible poker hand.
The Poker Hands
The poker hands are ranked in value depending on the sequence of cards that you have. The following is a list of different poker hands ranging from the most valuable and down to the least valuable:
- Royal Flush – Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10 of the same suit.
- Straight Flush – Any five cards from the same suit in a sequence.
- Four of a kind – Four cards of the same numeric value.
- Full House– Three cards of the same rank and two cards of another rank.
- Flush – Five cards of the same suit.
- Straight – Five cards in numerical order but not of the same suit.
- Three of a kind – Three cards of the same rank.
- Two pair – Two cards of the same rank and another two cards that share a rank.
- One pair – Two cards of the same rank.
- High Card – Five unmatched cards with one card outranking the others.
The Different Poker Variations
The great thing about poker games is that they come in many exciting ways to play. The various types of poker have their own distinct set of rules like different betting process, the number of community cards, and hand rankings just to name a few. There’s a wide range of poker games to choose from and the most popular ones include:
This is probably the most played of all poker games. Each player starts with two of their own cards, called hole cards. The first round of betting is called the pre-flop where players decide if they want to play their hand.
When all players have either joined or folded, three community cards, called the flop, are revealed. Players use these community cards to make the best 5-card hand possible. The next round of betting, the post-flop now starts where players can pass or increase their bet amount. When this is done, the dealer will reveal the fourth community card, known as the turn, and another round of betting commences.
The final betting round or showdown starts after the dealer reveals the river, the fifth community card. The best 5-card hand using any combination of the cards will win.
This game is played similarly to the game of Texas Hold’em, but players are dealt four of their own cards in addition to the five community card. The five card hand must consist of no more than two of your hole cards.
This is a variant of the Omaha Hi game. At the showdown, the pot is split between the holder of the highest hand and the holder of the lowest hand.
To win you must make the best low hand from the seven cards that you have been dealt.
Each player receives seven cards, four of these are up-cards and the remaining three are hole cards. The player with the best five hand combination wins.
Five Card Stud:
This is one of the oldest of all of the poker variations. The player is dealt one hole card and four up-cards. There are four betting rounds. The player with the best poker hand will win.
